What is an F1 Visa?
All citizens of a foreign country are required to obtain a visa before entering the United States. As an international student, you may be encouraged to file an F1 visa application.
How Do You Get an F1 Visa?
Students eligible for an F-1 visa must be approved and offered acceptance into a university or college in the USA. Typically, in order to be issued acceptance, a prospective student will have an embassy or consulate appointment which will determine their acceptance. During their appointment, students will need to prove:
- Admission as a full-time student at an academic or language school
- Intentions to return back to their home country after graduation
- Sufficient financial support to cover their living and studies while in the US
To learn more about the actual process, please see our article about how to apply for an F1 visa.
Proving Ties To Your Home Country
F1 visa requirements state that the international student must have a foreign residence and intent to return there upon completion of their studies. To do this, you must have strong ties to your home country including family, assets, bank accounts, etc. This can also include a job offer letter from your home country.
Working on an F1 Visa
F-1 visas are intended for full-time students, and are not designed as work visas. There is flexibility with this as F-1 visa holders are typically able to work 20 hours a week on campus when school is in session and full-time while school is in recess.
Additionally, F-1 visa holders are eligible to apply for permission to work off campus for up to 12 months. This permission is called Optional Practical Training (OPT) which allows F-1 students to train - and thus work - in a field that is related to their field of study. OPT can also be used for:
- part-time work during the F-1 student’s studies,
- full-time work during periods of recess, or
- after graduation in a field related to the program of study.
Transferring Schools with an F1 Visa
F-1 visa requirements also oblige students to study at the academic institution through which their F-1 visa application was filed and granted. An exception to this final F-1 visa requirement exists in the event that the student completes or leaves their current program of study with confirmed plans to study at a different institution in the US the following academic semester. In this case, F-1 students are allowed to file for an F-1 transfer. The process is done at the discretion of the school with which they filed their F-1 visa application.
Returning Home
Students are not required to immediately return home upon completion of their program on a F-1 visa. Instead, F-1 visa holders can remain in the US for up to 60 days after completing their academic program or OPT training.
