What is a J1 Visa
The J-1 program is primarily intended for those individuals who are interested in pursuing an education, doing an internship, being culturally immersed or getting hands on training in the United States. While there are many categories available to international students and scholars, the J-1 visa program is unique as it allows individuals to both study and work at the same time. This nonimmigrant visa allows foreign nationals to enter the US to disseminate information, participate in a cultural exchange and gain skills. Currently, over 170,000 participants can be found each month working, studying, or teaching in the US.
Originally started in 1961 under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act, the objective of the J1 Exchange Visitor was to strengthen international relations by promoting training and experience in the US. Individuals can come to the US under sponsorship through a governmental program, or through a private organization.
There a host of reasons you would need to apply for a J1 visa, here are some of the main categories:
- Short-Term Scholar Program - Every year, professors and research scholars teach and conduct research at US colleges and universities for up to 6 months.
- Au Pair Program - Individuals between the ages of 18 to 26 can come to the US for up to two years, live with a family, study at a US institution, and provide childcare to the family they live with.
- Internship - University students or recent graduates can also come to the US to learn about US culture and get hands-on experience in their chosen occupation.
- Work & Travel Program - Students who are enrolled full-time at a post-secondary school can come to the United States to work and travel during the winter, spring and summer seasons in the USA.
- Camp Counselor - Individuals 18 years and older can come to the US and work with American youth at US summer camps as a camp counselor or teacher.
- International Visitor Program - International visitors are selected by the US Department of State to consult, observe, research and train with Americans and US institutions.
The Department of State has more specific information about what status you would fall under, please visit the J-1 visa requirements on their website for more information.
Working in the US
As mentioned previously, the J-1 visa allows students to come to the United States to work. Students will have a number of options - whether they want to work as a professor, participate in a Work and Travel Program, or become an Au Pair in the United States - however it’s important to recognize that most jobs don’t pay much. The amount you make may cover your costs, but few students will find that they will cover much more than that.

The number of hours you can work will depend on the program that you apply for so it’s important to do your research and know the requirements. For example, some J-1 visas have a “two-year residence” requirement meaning that you would be physically required to be in your home country for two years after the completion of your J program. Know your program, and learn about what to expect from your job opportunities.
Studying in the US
Most non-US citizens who are looking to study in the US will apply for a F-1 visa, allowing them to undertake a degree or educational program in the US (link). Whether students get a F-1 visa or J-1 visa will depend on the financial sponsor or exchange program. Many J-1 holders who are in the US at a college or university are typically research scholars and visiting professors. Other J-1 programs do offer educational opportunities, such as Au Pairs, however it’s important to check with your sponsor to determine the visa you’ll be under.
