The US green cards were approved for around 100,000 overseas nationals in 2013, which permits them to settle permanently in the country. According to the latest statistics of US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), there is a rise in employment based permanent residents when compared to previous year.
In the year 2013, Out of 990,000 issued cards, 66% were granted under family sponsorship applications and 16% for new permanent residents, who gained their status under employer sponsorship. In family sponsorship applications about half of its group includes categories of parents, children and spouses of US citizens. The next major group for family-sponsored green cards was the F2 category for minor children and spouses of permanent residents. Most of the employment cases were filed in EB2 or EB3 employment based categories.
The leading country sourcing maximum number of permanent residents is Mexico with 13.6%, followed by China with 7.2%, India with 6.9% and the Philippines with 5.5%.
The further popular nations of origin include Dominican Republic with 4.2% of green cards, Cuba accounting for 3.3%, Vietnam constituting 2.7% and South Korea representing 2.3%. The remaining nations like Jamaica, Colombia, Haiti, El Salvador, Canada, Pakistan, Nepal, Ethiopia, Iran, Burma and the United Kingdom each constitute 2.1% or less number of new permanent residents. Around 35% of new permanent residents are from remaining countries across the world.
